The annual Incline Elementary School Jog-A-Thon starts at 9:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at the Incline Elementary School and students jog by grade. Family members are welcome to attend to cheer on their students.
INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Just jog for it. This is the motto for the annual Incline Elementary School Jog-A-Thon 2011, a slogan plastered on lime green shirts the local young students have earned by collecting donations to support the school’s physical education program.
The Jog-A-Thon dates back 20-plus years and was started to help support a very important program that is not paid for by the Washoe County School District. Incline Elementary is one of the few schools in Washoe County that provides a certified PE teacher, accomplished through private funding only. Without the financial support provided by the Jog-A-Thon, the school would be at risk for losing its PE program and certified teacher.

Most modern schools’ goals are to provide students with knowledge and the enthusiasm to maintain a healthy lifestyle into adulthood,” said IES Parent Teacher Association president and 2011 Jog-A-Thon coordinator Sandy Soli. “The tragedy is budget cuts and fiscal policies keep that from happening.”
Consequently, the rates of childhood obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and other conditions that are associated with heart disease, stroke and other disorders in young children are climbing at an alarming rate.
Today, education programs at all levels face intense criticism, and physical education programs are no exception. As school budgets shrink and administrators continue to make cuts, physical education may be one of the first programs to go.
With a formal physical education program at Incline Elementary School, the community can fight back against these health issues.
“It’s the PTA’s goal to once again fund this valuable physical education program through our Annual Jog-A-Thon,” Soli said. “With your help, and the support of the rest of the local business community, we will achieve our goal of raising $50,000 this year.”
Community sponsorships and donations to the Jog-A-Thon will help secure funding for this program. You can make a sponsorship or donation by visiting the school directly and dropping off a check, online to PTA Nevada Congress Incline Village at www.justgive.org.
